how to draw a 3d cube with shadow

3D Cube Drawing Guide for Beginners

In this art tutorial y'all'll learn how to describe a 3D cube (freehand) using two indicate perspective concepts. I won't be teaching you technical techniques using a ruler. Instead I want to evidence you how to draw a 3D box without using a ruler and vanishing points. The skills you volition larn here would be all-time utilized for sketching, drawing cartoons, or comic fashion art.

If you want a more technical drawing lesson, go to The Nuts of One Indicate Perspective.

You'll learn some basic concepts when it comes to drawing 3 dimensional cubes. There are some common mistakes people make that are easily corrected. All you lot need is some bones noesis to be able to identify and set up these mistakes.

With the techniques yous volition be learning in this drawing tutorial, you lot'll exist able to draw just about annihilation that takes on the basic shape of a cube. I didn't realize how many objects there are that are cubes until I starting putting this lesson together. They are everywhere!

Cube Drawing Vocabulary

Shape – a two-dimensional element created from line, and can be positive or negative.

Form – is created when depth is added to a two-dimensional shape making information technology three-dimensional.

Parallel Lines – two lines that are always the same distance apart but never touch.

Light Source – the direction in which the source of calorie-free is coming from. The low-cal source tells yous where all of your light values and shadows.

Shading – used in drawing to show a range of lighter to darker values. This helps to create the illusion of depth.

Value – Lightness or darkness of colors and tones that range from white to blackness.

Shadow – a dark expanse where the light from a light source is blocked by a solid object. This shadow is what we typically encounter no the object itself.

Cast Shadow – a shadow that is create past an object blocking calorie-free that is cast on the ground or another surface.

Shape Vs. Course

And so technically, a cube is a class not a shape. And by definition, is 3-dimensional. Both shape and form are one of The seven Elements of Fine art. The deviation between shape and form is that a shape is 2-dimensional, and a course is 3-dimensional.

And since drawing anything in 3D is way cooler looking than with 2D, most of our lessons focus on cartoon objects in 3D.

Since we take the technical stuff out of the manner, let'south go started.

Don't Describe Cubes Similar This

I'd like to get-go by saying this… If y'all are currently cartoon your 3D cubes using the overlapping square method. Please end! Information technology drives me basics when I see this.

It's nil short of a parlor trick and doesn't teach you anything. Furthermore, information technology'south near incommunicable to apply this method to any everyday object. My goal is to teach you the needed skills for yous to be able to await at any (cube shaped) object and depict it.

Let'south get started on something a bit more than practical to apply in your drawings.

How to Draw a Cube – Step past Footstep

I settled on this method afterward struggling to get my students to understand the concepts involved in drawing 3D shapes. Fifty-fifty the older ones struggled to draw a 3D cube correctly. After trying several different techniques, this is what I came up with that fabricated the most sense to them.

Pace 1 – First past Drawing the Corner Nearest to You

In that location are a couple of ways to begin drawing your cube. How you start will depend on the bending yous will be viewing your object. If you are looking at your object from a directly on view, you would use a 1-bespeak perspective concept. I won't be showing y'all that here though.

I find the ¾ view to be the nearly interesting most of the fourth dimension. For the purpose of this tutorial, I'll be focusing on the ¾ view. This will require you to follow the 2-signal perspective concepts.

Brainstorm by drawing the corner of the cube that is nearest to yous. It should wait something like this.

Step 2 – Draw the Bottom Edges

For the lesser edges of the cube, draw two lines forming a slight "Five" shape. The length of these lines will determine the overall shape of your cube. If you want your terminal drawing to look like an even cube, go along these lines roughly the same length.

Stride three – Depict the Top Edges

Next, draw the lines for the upper edge of your cube that are closet to you lot. These should also form a slight "Five" shape. It'due south very important that these lines are parallel to the respective lines on the lesser of the cube. The meridian and bottom lines to the left of your corner must be parallel to each other. Every bit well as the meridian and bottom lines to the right of your corner beingness parallel to each other.

Step four – Describe the Sides

Now y'all desire to connect these lines with two vertical lines. Both of these lines demand to be parallel with your initial corner line. If these three lines are not parallel with each other, your cube will first looking funky.

Step 5 – Draw the Edges Furthest from Y'all

Add in the edge of the cube that is furthest away from you. Again, keep these lines parallel with their counterparts across from them. If you look at the prototype below, you desire to keep the shorter lines parallel with each other. Too as the longer lines parallel with each other.

Step 6 –  Adding Depth to a 3D Box

The last thing you demand to do is add in the far corner to the within of your cube. This line should too exist parallel with the other three vertical lines.

Here is what my completed cube looks like.

You lot can also take this a step further and add some thickness to your cube by calculation some additional lines to your drawing. Once again, but keep your lines parallel.

How to Shade a Cube

An important part of cartoon, is learning how to shade. First, draw your 3D box or cube and decide on your light source. For this example, our light source is going to exist coming from the upper left.

3D-Box-Drawing

This will create the darkest shadow on the reverse side of the cube. The source of light will exist completely blocked on the far side of the cube.

I discover information technology easier to outset with the darkest area first.

We're going to work from darkest to lightest, so our centre value volition be adjacent. This light source on this side of the cube volition be partially blocked.

Have a await at Creating a Value Scale if you need aid achieving different values.

The verbal location of the light source will make up one's mind where the light reflects off the surface of your cube. For the purpose of learning how to shade a cube, you can just choose a spot on this side to exit a light spot.

The lightest side volition be the top of the box because there isn't anything blocking the lite. It looks meliorate if you add a light shadow nearest the calorie-free, and then fade that into white. You can leave it completely white if yous want also.

The terminal step is to add a cast shadow on the far side of your 3D cube cartoon. This should be every bit dark, or darker than the side of your cube.

When learning how to draw a cube, shading is near as of import as the actual drawing. Don't feel similar everything you practice has to be perfect though. Larn and sympathize the basic concepts, and improve over time with exercise.

How to Draw a 3D Box from Real Life

Equally I was walking around work today I was looking for something interesting to describe that had a bones shape of a cube. There were so many options to choose from.

I settled on this crate that I came beyond. I thought it would be fun to draw, then here we go. As mentioned in my before post, Anyone Tin Learn to Draw,  the kickoff thing you have to do is acquire to "See". You lot should brainstorm past taking note of the bending at the bottom of the crate as you get-go to layout your sketch.

From-a-Crate-to-a-3D-Cube

This was my initial sketch that I did. However, later looking at it, I realized 1 of the boards wasn't quite correct. The angle of the centre board on the top is off only slightly, which makes a pretty big difference. If you wanted your boards to look uneven, and so this would work just fine.

I re-drew the top lath so information technology was parallel with the boards next to it. This was my concluding sketch. The board I fixed is drawn with a regular pencil. I as well cleaned up the bottom boards likewise.

I'll get out you with this claiming. How many different objects can you describe from a cube? I would love to encounter what you come upward with. Please stop back and share your results.

Here is my do page. I walked effectually the business firm and apace sketched anything that was cube shaped. The more y'all practice, the meliorate y'all will be able to "Encounter" what you are cartoon. This is a quick exercise that you would benefit from doing often.
